The kingdom of Ghana flourished around 1000 CE and expanded to take control of the Niger River and the Senegal Rivers. By 1240 CE, the kingdom of Ghana was absorbed by the growing Mali kingdom which went on to flourish in 1312 with Musa Keita I (Mansa Musa) as the ruler which was considered to be the golden age of the Mali kingdom.
